What is a gas absoprtion heat pump (GAHP)?
Albert Einstein invented and patented the gas absorption heat pump in 1926. It was initially used in refrigerators and the technology was bought by Electrolux to be distributed to the public.
While the technology has continued to be used for refrigeration since then, it’s also been providing facility-wide heating, cooling, and hot water for the past few decades in Europe. This technology came to North America 7 years ago and FortisBC is the first utility to incentivize its adoption.

FortisBC rebate program
FortisBC is offering an amazing and easy to access rebate program for gas abosprtion heat pumps. The prgram has been designed in way to allow potential users to asses this amazing technology with zero risk. Here’s how it works –
Step 1 – Feasibility Study
Up to $20,000 (100% of project cost) in feasibility study funding to help with the cost of having a detailed engineering analysis performed. This rebate applies whether you proceed with the project or not.
Step 2 – The Project
Up to $200,000 (75% of the total project costs), is available to carry out gas absorption heat pump projects.
